Toxic leaders, toxic behavior, toxic results
Since the publication of Toxic Emotions at Work by Peter J Frost,
several efforts to focus on researching toxic behaviors of leaders have
generated more interest.
One remarkable avenue of research is the one related to Toxic Leadership Scales. Two kinds of institutions have shown a particular interest on the topic. And again the reason is simple: toxic leadership consequences in the battlefield kill. So does toxic leaders behavior in the operating room. Of course, the fact that armed forces and hospitals are aware of the consequences of toxic leadership is just a hint that we may be surrounded by the same problems in government and private enterprises.
One of the best pieces of research on Toxic Leadership Scales has found
five statistical factors to assess and characterize toxic leader’s behavior,
namely:
- > Abusive Supervision
- > Authoritarian Leadership
- > Narcissism
- > Self-Promotion
- > Unpredictability
The practical value of this scale is that people can act on facts either
to provide different sorts of support, treatment, or termination decisions.
